NDA Exam
The next exam of the National Defence Academy (NDA) will be conducted by the UPSC on August 21.
Students who are in their final year intermediate education (2011-12 ) or those who have taken the final examination in March last are eligible to take the NDA examination for a career in the Army, Navy or Air Force as Class 1 Commissioned Officer.
The examination will be of objective type and only men can apply.
Eligibility
Men born between July 2, 1993 and January 1, 1996 (both dates inclusive) can apply.
They should have passed 10+2 or they should be in final year or those likely to appear for final exams in March 2012.
Exam Date: August 21, 2011
Selection process
Stage-1:NDA written examination (900 marks): Paper I - Maths (Matrices & determinants, Algebra, Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry of two & three dimensions, Differential and integral calculus and differential, Equations Vector, Vector Algebra, Statistics & probability for 300 Marks); Paper II -General Ability (English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, International and National affairs - 600 Marks)
Stage-2 : Service Selection Board Interview total Marks – 900: Basic Perception (Intelligence) - Verbal, Non-verbal; Psychological (Projective Personality) - Word Association Test (WAT), Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) and Situation Reaction Test (SRT); Group Testing Series (Indoor tests) – Group Discussion, Group Planning Exercise and Lecturette; (Outdoor Tests) – Command Tasks / Progressive Group task / Half Group Task, Individual / Group Obstacle Race; Personal Interview (indoor) – Sequential.
Preparation
Those who get a maximum score out of 1800 marks, the total of written exam and SSB score will make it to the NDA national merit list. How should one prepare for the exam is of vital importance for success.
The NDA exam syllabus has been revamped and a student who prepares thoroughly on AIEEE pattern question banks especially in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry would be at an advantage, opines Captain R. Sircar, Director of Officers Academy (040 – 27834739/ 27820339) which trains students taking the NDA exams. “Quick application of concepts in both the papers needs to be practiced by the students preferably with diagrammatic layouts and short cut methods to save on time and picking the correct answers”, says Captain Sircar.
To tackle the general ability paper, one must read newspapers and keep himself abreast of national and international developments. Good knowledge of English grammar would be of great help as the English grammar section has 50 questions. Text books of the NCERT would of great use for history, geography and political science sections.

Highlights of Civil Services (Exam), 2010
The Civil Services Examination is the most important and prestigious examination amongst various examinations conducted by the UPSC. It attracts largest number of candidates from the entire length and breadth of the country. The selected candidates are appointed to the higher Civil Services of the country.
Following are the important highlights of the Civil Services Examination, 2010, for which final result has been declared today:
« A total number of 5,47,698 candidates applied for this examination, 2,69,036 candidates appeared for the Preliminary examination, which was conducted on May 23, 2010.
« 12,491 candidates qualified for the Main written examination held in October ¡V November, 2010. 2589 candidates were short listed for the Personality Test conducted in March-April, 2011.
« Finally, 920 candidates (717 male and 203 female) have been recommended for appointment to the IAS, IFS, IPS and other Central Services.
« Ms. S.Divyadharshini (Roll NO.014421), a female candidate, has topped the Civil Services Examination, 2010. She has done B.A., B.L.(Hons.) from Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Chennai. This is her second attempt.
« The second ranker is Ms. Sweta Mohanty (Roll NO.316736). She has done B.Tech (Computer Science) from GRIET, JNTU, Hyderabad. This is her third attempt.
« Mr. RV Varun Kumar (Roll No.021490), is the topper among male candidates. He has secured overall third rank. He has done BDS from Ragas Dental College, Chennai. This is his third attempt.
« The Top 25 candidates consist of 20 males and 5 females.
« Educational qualification ¡Vwise the top 25 candidates comprise of 15 candidates belonging to Engineering; 5 candidates belonging to Commerce, Management, Humanities, Science & Social Sciences; and 5 candidates belonging to Medical Science background.
« Out of the Top 25 candidates, 8 have made to the merit list in their first attempt, 4 in second attempt, 9 in third attempt, 3 in fourth attempt and 1 in fifth attempt.
« Of the 920 candidates recommended, 28 are physically challenged candidates, 14 orthopaedically challenged; 5 visually impaired and 9 hearing impaired.

ICET 2011 SYLLABUS
Section-A: Analytical Ability: 75Q (75 Marks)
1. Data Sufficiency: 20Q (20Marks)
A question is given followed by data in the form of two statements labeled as i and ii. If the data given in i alone is sufficient to answer the question then choice (1) is the correct answer. If the data given in ii alone is sufficient to answer the question then choice (2) is the correct answer. If both i and ii put together are sufficient to answer the question but neither statement alone is sufficient, then choice (3) is the correct answer. If both i and ii put together are not sufficient to answer the question and additional data is needed, then choice (4) is the correct answer.
2. Problem Solving 55Q (55Marks)
a) Sequences and Series 25Q (25 Marks)
Analogies of numbers and alphabet, completion of blank spaces following the pattern in a:b::c:d relationship; odd thing out: missing number in a sequence or a series.
b) Data Analysis 10Q (10 Marks)
The data given in a Table, Graph, Bar diagram, Pie Chart, Venn Diagram or a Passage is to be analyzed and the questions pertaining to the data are to be answered.
c) Coding and Decoding Problems 10Q (10 Marks)
A code pattern of English Alphabet is given. A given word or a group of letters are to be coded or de-coded based on the given code or codes
d) Date, Time & Arrangement Problems 10Q (10 Marks)
Calendar problems, clock problems, blood relationships, arrivals, departures and schedules, seating arrangements, symbol and notation interpretation
Section -B: Mathematical Ability 75Q (75 Marks)
I. Arithmetical Ability 35Q (35 Marks)
Laws of indices, ratio and proportion; surds; numbers and divisibility, l.c.m. and g.c.d; Rational numbers, Ordering.; Percentages; Profit and loss; Partnership, Pipes and cisterns, time, distance and work problems, areas and volumes, mensuration, modular arithmetic.
II. Algebraical and Geometrical Ability 30Q (30 Marks)
Statements, Truth tables, implication converse and inverse, Tautologies Sets, Relations and functions, applications – Equation of a line in different forms. Trigonometry – Trigonometric ratios, Trigonometric ratios of standard angles, (0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 90°, 180°): Trigonometric identities: sample problems on heights and distances, Polynomials; Remainder theorem and consequences; Linear equations and expressions; Progressions, Binomial Theorem, Matrices, Notion of a limit and derivative; Plane geometry – lines, Triangles, Quadrilaterals, Circles, Coordinate geometry-distance between points.
III.Statistical Ability: 10Q (10 Marks)
Frequency distributions, Mean, Median, Mode, Standard Deviations, Correlation, simple problems on Probability.
Section-C: Communication Ability: 50Q (50 Marks)
Objectives of the Test
Candidates will be assessed on the ability to

2. Understand the functional use of grammar in day-to-day communication as well as in the business contexts.
